What the Certifications Are Measured Against

Four published measurements sit behind the claims on this page. A booth filter has to demonstrate 98% paint-overspray capture, a fabric enclosure is evaluated against a flame-propagation test method, and the material itself is measured by the coated-fabric tests. Certificates are paperwork; these are the measurements the paperwork refers to.

• 40 CFR § 63.11173(e)(2)(i) — the filter efficiency floor. Booth filters must be “demonstrated to achieve at least 98 percent capture of paint overspray”, by a procedure “consistent with the ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 52.2-2017”, challenged with 100 grams of loading dust and weighed to 0.1 gram. This is why filter performance here is stated as a test result, not an adjective.
• ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 52.2-2017 — the test method that produces a MERV. The filter rule points at a specific, published test rather than a manufacturer's description, so a MERV value with 52.2 data behind it is the only kind of efficiency claim that can be checked.
• NFPA 701 — flame propagation in a textile enclosure. “Standard Methods of Fire Tests for Flame Propagation of Textiles and Films”, current edition 2023, is the test method to evaluate a fabric booth wall against. It is not the same question as fire-rated construction, which is what NFPA 33 addresses for spray booths.
• ASTM D751 — the coated-fabric test battery. Grab and cut-strip breaking strength, pendulum and tongue tear, trapezoidal tear, hydrostatic resistance, coating-to-fabric adhesion, seam strength and dead-load seam strength. A PVC or Oxford booth wall is a coated fabric, and this is the family of tests it is measured by.
• ASTM D5034 and ASTM D2261 — the two tests that decide whether a panel survives. Grab breaking strength and elongation, and tear strength by the tongue (single rip) procedure — the numbers a seam or an air beam is judged by when it is pulled and torn.
• ASTM D1577 — the unit a fabric weight claim belongs in. Linear density of textile fibers, where denier is 1 gram per 9,000 metres of yarn — which is why we quote fabric by weight and denier rather than by thickness in millimeters.
• OSHA 29 CFR 1910.107 and 40 CFR Part 63 Subpart HHHHHH — the operational rules behind the booths. Airflow, booth construction, clearance, housekeeping and filter disposal come from 1910.107; the 98% capture floor and the whole-vehicle enclosure requirement come from the 6H NESHAP.
