Painting a motorcycle in an inflatable paint booth is a 7-step workflow: size the booth to your largest part, prep the floor, stage parts by coat, establish airflow before mixing paint, spray frame and tins in a fixed order, control flash time with the booth running, then service filters at teardown. A 13×8×8 ft booth handles a disassembled bike; step up to 20×10×9 ft if you want to walk around a fully assembled motorcycle. Because 2K urethane clear is solvent-heavy, plan for 90–120 air changes per hour, not the 60 ACH baseline used for general finishing.
A motorcycle is the smallest vehicle that still requires a real spray environment. You are dealing with solvent-borne base coats and 2K urethane clear on a surface that gets looked at from six inches away — tank, fenders, cowl, and frame all sit at eye level when the bike is finished. At the same time the total part volume is small enough that a compact booth genuinely works. That combination makes motorcycles the sweet spot for inflatable booths: professional-grade isolation and filtration, without needing a car-sized enclosure or a fixed building.
The workflow below is written for a full repaint — tank, plastics, fenders, and frame — but the same sequence applies to a single-part touch-up. It assumes you are spraying 2K acrylic urethane (base coat plus hardener-activated clear), which is the standard for durable motorcycle finishes.
2K urethane clears contain isocyanates, which are respiratory sensitizers. A dust mask or a simple organic-vapor cartridge is not sufficient. Use a properly fitted respirator with isocyanate-rated cartridges and full-face eye protection, or a supplied-air hood — and keep the booth's exhaust running. Filtration removes overspray from the air; it does not replace personal protective equipment.
A disassembled motorcycle plus room to move fits comfortably in a 13×8×8 ft enclosure. A 2.2 × 0.8 × 1.4 m motorcycle leaves roughly 1 m of clearance at each end and 1 m per side in that class — enough to spray the tank and fenders from both sides without backing into the wall. Inflate fully and let the shell stabilise before you load anything. Lay a disposable floor covering — 0.9 mm PVC drop cloth or heavy kraft paper — because overspray that lands on the booth floor becomes a dust source the moment you walk through it. Anchor the D-rings on all four corners; a partially inflated shell shifts when you open the personnel door, and a shifting wall drags the filter wall with it. Set up lighting before parts arrive: a single overhead source leaves the lower half of the bike in shadow, and you cannot spray what you cannot see.
Strip the motorcycle as far as your project requires — tank, side panels, front and rear fenders, tail, and any painted frame or swingarm sections. Group the parts into a spray order rather than a disassembly order: large, flat, low-detail parts first (fenders, side panels), the tank next (its compound curves show technique flaws most clearly), and small brackets and trim last. Lay parts on risers so you can spray the underside edges without re-touching wet surfaces. Mask or plug every threaded hole, fuel outlet, and mount point before any paint is mixed.
Start the inflation blower and the exhaust fan and let them stabilise for a full two minutes. Then run a smoke test: air should move visibly past the parts at roughly 100 ft/min, the OSHA capture-velocity target. If smoke lingers around the tank, you have a dead zone — reposition the exhaust port to the centre of the end wall or reorient the parts so their long axis is parallel to airflow. Lay down a sealer or epoxy primer over bare metal and bodywork, allow it to flash per the product sheet, then apply base coat in two to three medium-wet passes. Maintain a consistent 6–8 inch gun distance and overlap each pass by 50%. For the tank, follow the contour rather than the length — travelling across the compound curve keeps the metallic orientation consistent, which is what prevents a blotchy flip at the filler cap. For frame and tubular parts, spray along the tube, not around it, then come back for the hidden side after flash.
Leave the blower and exhaust running between coats. Airflow is what carries solvent vapour out; shutting the booth down to "let it dry" traps solvent in the enclosure and dramatically raises the risk of solvent pop and trapped contamination in the clear. Give base coat a full flash before clear, then apply clear in two wet coats with the recommended intercoat interval. Keep the booth sealed and running through the final flash.
Let the booth fully purge before you open it — a minimum of 15–20 minutes of run time with no spraying. Remove parts on risers, cure them outside the booth, and only then deflate. Before the next session, inspect the pre-filter; a motorcycle repaint loads the pre-filter heavily because of the number of small parts and the volume of clear. The general finishing baseline is 60 air changes per hour. Motorcycle work rarely stays at that number, because the clear coat that makes a bike finish durable is also the most solvent-heavy product you will spray. Plan on 90–120 ACH for base-plus-clear sessions.
For a 13×8×8 ft booth (832 ft³) at 90 ACH: 832 × 90 ÷ 60 = 1,248 CFM. Apply the filter-loading derate of 1.3–1.5× and you need roughly 1,600–1,870 CFM of rated capacity — which is beyond a single compact blower once its filters are loaded. That is the arithmetic that pushes most serious motorcycle painters to a dual-blower configuration or an airtight booth with an integral exhaust fan.

The most common and most damaging habit. Solvent needs airflow to leave the enclosure. Turning the blower off to "let it settle" traps vapour against wet clear and produces solvent pop and haze. Keep the system running until the final flash is complete.
A single compact blower that holds pressure on a primer session will struggle once the filters load with clear overspray. If your booth walls sag mid-session, you are already under-ventilated — see the derate maths above.
Metallic and pearl bases orient with the direction of travel. Spraying the length of a compound-curved tank makes the flake lie in conflicting directions, which reads as a blotchy patch at the filler cap. Follow the contour instead.
Overspray that lands on the booth floor dries, then gets walked into the air as dust. A disposable floor covering replaced between sessions is one of the cheapest quality improvements available.
2K clear is touch-dry long before it is handleable. Moving parts out of the booth too early leaves fingerprints, cloth marks, and edge damage that has to be sanded out and re-cleared. Follow the product data sheet's cure window, then let parts cure outside the booth.

Temperature matters more than most painters expect. Most 2K systems specify an application range around 65–85°F (18–30°C); below that, flash times stretch and clear can fail to flow out.
