How to Choose the Right Inflatable Paint Booth Size

Why Size Matters More Than You Think

An undersized paint booth is one of the most common — and most expensive — mistakes in shop setup. A booth that fits the vehicle but leaves no room for the painter leads to cramped spray technique, inconsistent coverage, and overspray on filter walls. A booth that is too large wastes blower energy on heating and filtration, increases carbon filter replacement costs, and inflates the purchase price without proportional benefit.

The correct size is the smallest booth that comfortably contains your largest project plus the working clearance required for safe spray gun operation. Inflatable booths add one extra variable: the booth itself is a flexible envelope, so internal clearances change with air pressure and standing conditions. The engineering approach is to oversize critical dimensions by 10–15% over what a rigid booth would require.

The Six-Step Sizing Process

Step 1 — Measure Your Largest Project

List every item you realistically plan to paint in the next 3 years, not just today's project. Include seasonal items: a snowmobile in winter, a boat hull in spring, a full-size truck in fall. The booth must accommodate the largest, not the average.

Measure three dimensions for each:

Step 2 — Calculate Booth Length

Booth length formula:

Length = Vehicle Length + 2 × 1.0 m Clearance + 0.5 m Filter Wall

The 1.0 m side clearance allows a painter to crouch and reach the side of the vehicle at a 90° spray angle without backing into the booth wall. The 0.5 m filter wall accounts for the industrial-grade/carbon filter rack mounted on the rear wall.

Worked example — full-size pickup truck (5.5 m / 18 ft long):
5.5 + 2.0 + 0.5 = 8.0 m → round up to the 7–10 m size class. A 7 m booth is too tight (no working room); 8 m gives 0.5 m clearance per side, which is workable but minimal. A 9–10 m booth provides proper breathing room.

Step 3 — Calculate Booth Width

Booth width formula:

Width = Vehicle Width + 2 × 0.8 m Side Clearance

For a 2.0 m wide car: 2.0 + 1.6 = 3.6 m → a 4 m booth is sufficient. For a 2.5 m wide dually truck: 2.5 + 1.6 = 4.1 m → still fits a 4.5 m booth, but a 5 m booth provides much better filter access on the rear wall.

Step 4 — Verify Door Clearance

The zipper door is the most common bottleneck. Sewinfla booths use a heavy-duty #10 zipper that runs floor-to-ceiling on one end. Internal door height is typically 2.8–3.0 m for the 4–6 m class, scaling up to 3.5–4.0 m for 11–12 m booths.

Rule: internal door height must exceed vehicle height by at least 0.3 m. A 2.1 m tall SUV needs at least 2.4 m door clearance. Most 4–6 m booths are 2.8 m internal — comfortable for SUVs and most light trucks.

For oversized vehicles (box trucks, RV shells, raised 4×4 suspensions), measure the full roof-line including any roof rack or AC unit. Custom door heights are available for all Sewinfla size classes.

Step 5 — Match CFM to Booth Volume

Airflow is the most undersized spec in the industry. The booth must exchange the internal air volume enough times per hour to capture overspray before it migrates outside the booth envelope. NFPA 33 and most local industrial-grade regulations require a minimum of 60 air changes per hour for spray finishing operations.

CFM formula:

Required CFM = (Length × Width × Height in m³) × 60 ÷ 60

Worked example — 8 m × 4 m × 3 m booth = 96 m³:
96 × 60 ÷ 60 = 96 CFM minimum. Sewinfla recommends 150 CFM (50% safety margin) for finishing work and 200+ CFM for clear coat or metallic base coats that require a cleaner air envelope.

Step 6 — Choose Size Class

4–6 m / 13–20 Ft

Motorcycles, ATV, small parts, single panel repair, furniture. Fits one compact car or one motorcycle + tools. Single-blower operation.

7–10 m / 23–33 Ft

Full-size sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, small boats. The most popular size class. Built-in isolation room available on 7–10 m units.

11–12 m / 36–39 Ft

Common Sizing Mistakes

Mistake 1 — Buying for Today Only

Many buyers select the booth that fits their current project without considering future growth. If you plan to move from motorcycle work to car restoration in 24 months, the 4–6 m booth will be obsolete within two years. The price difference between the 4–6 m and 7–10 m classes is roughly 35–45% — significantly less than the cost of replacing the booth entirely.

Mistake 2 — Ignoring Filter Wall Depth

Every Sewinfla booth uses a rear filter wall that consumes 0.4–0.6 m of internal length. Buyers who calculate length based on the exterior dimension lose this clearance. The formula in Step 2 accounts for filter wall depth — always use it.

Mistake 3 — Underestimating Painter Movement

Professional spray technique requires the painter to step back 1.0–1.5 m from the panel to achieve the correct 6–10 inch spray distance and proper overlap pattern. A booth that fits the vehicle but leaves no room behind the painter produces rushed, inconsistent work. The 1.0 m clearance in Step 2 is the minimum, not a luxury.

Mistake 4 — Forgetting Door Swing Clearance

The zipper door folds back against the side wall when open. The fold adds 0.3 m to the effective booth width on the open side. If you have a tight side clearance to a wall, account for this fold — or plan to enter from the end opposite the wall.
